Overview

Under the direction of the Director of Camping Services and in accordance with the purpose, policy and principles of the YMCA of Central New Mexico, this position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. A support staff member at the YMCA of New Mexico maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families.

 

Support Staff members assist our counselors, cooks, administrative and maintenance staff to make each week the best one yet. These folks work behind the scenes to make sure our facilities are clean and well cared for. They assist making each program area ready in advance or clean up afterward so the campers can focus on getting the most out of their experiences at camp. A support staff will work with the larger team to accomplish the goals of Camp Shaver: accomplishment, belonging and character development.

Schedule is Monday-Friday, and weekends as assigned for the season.  

 

Summer Season 

  • Staff Training Begins: May 23, 2026

  • Season Ends: August 1, 2026

Responsibilities

  • Assist other staff members with a variety of tasks and complete those tasks in a timely manner.
  • Support and maintain our facilities to a high standard.
  • Set-up or break down games, program areas, etc. to ensure a smooth transition for the campers and counseling staff.
  • Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds appropriately to emergency situations. Completes related reports as required.
  • Maintains positive relationships with members, participants, families and other staff.
  • Able to collaborate and communicate well with a team.
  • Possess good judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Attends and participates in all staff meetings and trainings.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age requirement of 17.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required; will be provided training if candidate does not have current certification.
  • Previous experience working with children and staff in a camp setting preferred.
  • Previous experience working with diverse populations preferred.
